Extraordinary castle with a deer park

In 1826, Count Matthias Thun-Hohenstein decided to drain the fishpond located behind Žehušice Castle and to build a fence around the area, while introducing a variety of deer. Eventually the enclosure was re-landscaped into a natural park with an adjoining deer park.

In 1948 the entire property was seized from the Thun family by the state, and by 1970 it was being used as an educational institution. In 1989 the castle was restored to its present condition.

Over the years, the deer park was maintained, as it was declared a natural monument. However, there were no funds to maintain the chateau and the surrounding buildings, so they went 15 years without any notable restoration.

The trees in the park are quite old, many of them dating back more than 100 years. Around the border of the wooded area runs a network of tarmac roads. Buildings on the site comprise the chateau, an entrance building with a gateway, two detached houses with outbuildings, and four gamekeeper’s houses (two of which have been renovated).

Other buildings not included in the purchase price, but which originally belonged to the estate, are situated in front of the gateway: a riding-hall, brewery, and various farm buildings. These buildings are also available for sale separately.
