Lifestyles Magazine Prague: Design- Vitra’s Debt to Eames
Vitra was founded in 1950 by furniture maker Willi Feldbaum, in Weil am Rhein, Germany. Three years later, on a trip to the United States, Feldbaum was bowled over by the Eames DSR chair. In 1957, Herman Miller transferred the rights to produce and distribute furniture designed by Charles & Ray Eames for Europe to Vitra. Today, the company still holds the rights to Eames designs for Europe and the Middle East.Now, Vitra has branches all over the world and works with top international designers such as George Nelson, the author of the Coconut Chair; the internationally distinguished designer of office interiors, Sevil Peach; Czech designer and Prague Castle Architect Borek Sipek; and, posthumously, the legendary French designer Charles Prouve. Their designs – at once practical, playful, durable, comfortable and pleasing to the eye – are still in production, still in demand, still inspiring others today.Born in 1907 in Saint Louis Missouri, Charles Eames learned about engineering, drawing, and architecture while working after school at the Laclede Steel Company. Look around you. Chances are that at least one piece of furniture you see was based on a design by Charles and Ray Eames.In fact, many of the objects we take for granted today – the plastic shell chair, the one-legged contract table, or the sleek, polyester-padded aluminum chair – were conceived in the Venice, California studio of this legendary couple more than 50 years ago.
This ability to create an item that, without any modification would continue to appeal to the broad public for more than five decades – and to do it over and over again – is a staggering feat in the fickle world of modern design.
