In 1826, Count Matthias Thun- Hohenstein decided to drain the fishpond located behind Žehušice Castle and to build a fence around the area, while introducing a variety of deer into the area.

Eventually the enclosure was relandscaped into a natural park with an adjoining deer-park. In 1948 the entire property was seized from the Thun family by the state, and by 1970 it was being used as an educational institution. In 1989 the castle was restored to its present condition. Over the years, the deer-park was maintained, as it was declared a natural monument. However, there were no funds to maintain the chateau and the surrounding buildings, so they went 15 years without any notable restoration.
